The Proven Benefits of PACE

The Proven Benefits of PACE

The Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) is a nationally recognized model that helps older adults live independently while receiving comprehensive medical and social support. The PACE model of care has been studied extensively. Research shows that PACE programs produce better health and life outcomes than traditional medical care models or nursing homes. Compared to similar patients, PACE participants live longer, remain in their homes longer, and have fewer hospital visits. The PACE model is a proven game-changer for high-risk, older adults.

Whether you’re a family member, healthcare provider, or prospective participant, here’s what the evidence says about the benefits of PACE.

Longer, Healthier Lives

PACE participants often live longer than those in traditional long-term care settings. This is due to the program’s interdisciplinary care teams, which provide coordinated, proactive healthcare and social support. A study published in the Journals of Gerontology in 2010 found that PACE participants lived longer lives than either patients in nursing homes or on the Medicaid waiver programs.

Better Mental Health and Emotional Well-Being

A paper published in 2015 in The Consultant Pharmacist found that 80% of people who were depressed when they first enrolled in PACE were no longer depressed after 9 months with PACE support. PACE centers offer socialization, recreational therapy, and emotional support. These services have been shown to reduce depression and anxiety among participants. The program’s holistic approach includes activities and counseling that support emotional wellness, which is especially important for older adults facing isolation.

Aging Safely at Home

Despite needing nursing home-level care, 94% of PACE participants live at home. PACE programs are founded on the idea that it is better for frail elderly people to age at home and in their communities whenever possible.

Fewer Hospitalizations

A number of studies, including a 2014 literature review by the Dept. of Health and Human Services have concluded that PACE’s preventive care model leads to fewer hospitalizations and emergency visits, reducing stress for participants and families.

Support for Family Caregivers

PACE helps caregivers by offering respite care, care coordination, and emotional support. A recent study by Vital Research found that the percentage of caregivers reporting high stress dropped from 47% to 18% after joining PACE.

High Satisfaction

PACE participants and their families report high satisfaction. In a 2024 survey of family caregivers of PACE participants conducted by Vital Research and CalPACE, 95% of caregivers said they would recommend PACE to a family member in a similar situation. Source: National PACE Association.

Final Thoughts

The PACE model of care is more than a healthcare program—it’s a lifeline for seniors and their caregivers. With proven outcomes in health, satisfaction, and cost savings, it’s a model worth considering for anyone navigating the challenges of aging.
